What can you learn from a Caterpillar?

Published Jun 2, 2009

I think all of nature can be a shadow of greater spiritual realities we could never comprehend without its context. With that in mind, I submit a poem:

Chrysalis

She thinks only of herself.
Relentlessly consuming and often consumed,
Destined for more, a way has been made.

Wrapped in a shroud of insignificance,
A transformation is underway.
The bonds that confine so tightly begin to fall away.
The struggle brings her strength she'll need to survive,
more than just survive... fly.

She is accustomed to the air now.
The novelty of flight quickly fades.
She knows inside what she thought was the goal,
was simply the means, the capacity for purpose.

She dances now across the landscape,
her colors and vibrance the envy of the Kingdom.
Life follows her.
A wake of pollination brings new life
to generations anchored to the ground.

Suddenly, a flash of color catches her periphery.
She knows she's no longer alone.
The four winds bring so many more.
No words are necessary.
They all know who they are and how they got there,
and that it's time for a journey.

Many diverse parts come together.
The sum result a breathtaking whole.
Each strikingly unique, yet they share a destiny
greater than they could have imagined.

A distant land she thought was her dream
is on the hearts of the others as well.
Their collective strength inspires and encourages.
A single droplet of water can join a mighty flowing river
that can reshape the earth.

They embark together on a rising wind.
They travel further, faster, higher than anyone believed was possible.
She doesn't feel clumsy and awkward anymore.
She knows she finally belongs.

A beautiful new world has come.
